Lent is here again - so another period of sobriety in the Coe household!

I started twittering late last night/early this morning and I think I almost got it - I did get a kind of 2005 vibe - a bit like when I first started to blog.

So as well as giving up the booze - my resolution for Lent is that I'm going to twitter and see if I can get into the habit.

A lot of the tweets will be retweets - and links from the few people I follow - but maybe that will help me to focus / be aware of the things that are more important to me - in business and in life...

Have been playing around with words for my new consultancy and came up with "fundamentorism" (by mistake - the way you do...).

Dave Wilson and I are planning to be "cleverologists" - but because one of our key themes has always been teaching "clever stuff" to our lovely customers - then I think this combination of FUN and MENTORING really suits...

So maybe I'm a fundamentorist cleverologist?

It's been a while - so I thought I'd re-read the Cluetrain Manifesto the other day...

I skipped over the actual manifesto and just read the articles by Locke, Searls, Weinberg and Levine and a lot of it still sounds like most of the people I talk to still don't get it:

However, employees are getting hyperlinked even as markets are. Companies need to listen carefully to both. Mostly, they need to get out of the way so intranetworked employees can converse directly with internetworked

New buzzword/phrase I love - "Adaptive Web Architecture".

I'm probably going to write a Client Brief or an e-book on this subject over the winter months.

Currently it's a mixture of the Persuasion Pathway concept - combined with the ability of websites to deliver highly personalised / contextual user journeys nowadays.

It's also the beginnings of a more meaningful discussion around empathetic copywriting based on people's behavioural motivation styles... Phew!

As part of our sales and marketing initiative we just want to make it really easy for existing / previous customers to refer us to new contacts.

Anyway - we'll start by focussing on our client extranet activity and see what results we get - then we'll open it out to customers as a solution/service once we establish how successful it is.

Several people I work with seem to think that I'm a planner.

My job title is Digital Strategy Director (Dude) but working at Chemistry Digital in Nottingham I've got lots of different hats.

I'd like to think that I'm a creative generalist but looking at my RSS feeds this morning I do subscribe to quite a few Planning blogs - so I must be interested in this area.

There's a good post at Northern Planner about seizing the day and stuff... that's what we need to be doing - stop assuming that the conversations we started 2 years ago are a given. They're not...

In fact most marketers still don't know what I'm talking about - most of the time - or is that just my poor communication skills?

So the 12 episodes are over and as the world's most popular podcast Ricky, Steve and Karl have announced that they will be continuing - but as a paid subscription service through i-tunes.

I've really enjoyed listening to them - but will I be prepared to pay for access?

Can't find anywhere yet to see how they'll wan. A low amount 5p? 10p?

That's good value - isn't it? Or will they want you to subscribe to the next 12 for a higher fee?

I won't be rushing to sign up - I think I'll see how much it costs - I wonder what will happen to the stats?

I've been trying to get started on an exploratory script about a grumpy old Polish dude for a while now. When my daughter read the first few pages last year she was impressed.

Not with the amazing level of creativity on display, or the amazing way that I'd immediately conjured up a cold, dark, intriguing night in 1939...

"No - Dad it's really good because you've got an old guy going Bah! - I love that... oh wait - he says it twice on the same page - brilliant!" (she has got her MA now so maybe she's right? Bah!)

Having decided to cut down on the time I spend blogging, checking RSS feeds etc I looked at the pile of books next to my bed and thought - I'll go back to reading...

There are three books - which I've started and not yet finished (including Seth's "All Marketers are Liars").

A few months ago I'd have read this in one sitting - maybe two... but I just can't get excited about it anymore?

Dave and I said in a recent podcast - as an excuse for being geeks "...we don't get out much" but the fact is that I do - it's been a really busy year at work and play. I need a rest - not from work - but from the excess input.

I'm going to be ruthless with my RSS and lighten up my information flow...

ISOLATION tells of the gradual rekindling of a love affair, haunted by the past.

It’s 1423 and Lieutenant Zhao Jiang returns home after travels overseas with the legendary Chinese explorer, Admiral Zheng He.

A new Emperor has banned all naval trading and exploration and a programme to destroy their enormous “treasure ships” has already begun.

Jiang is unexpectedly reunited with Lin, whose family had persuaded her to reject his marriage proposal six years previously.

I signed up on RSS a few weeks ago to re:invention a blog so that I could do some more research on "marketing to/for women"....

In my RSS feed today I find out that they've decided to stop all posting...

They've gone off to re:invent themselves - and why not??

Talking to some customers yesterday about blogging, RSS and podcasting -- I need some material to support this now...

We talk in show seven about mainstream media only just catching up with blogging - let alone podcasting.

I think this is a bit of a reality check for me - it'll be a good few years before the "world at large" gets it... (in fact as we've discovered with websites, e-newsletters and other stuff - lots of people will never get "it"...)

but then - that's why we don't fear change... what's next?

Still trying to determine how much time to commit to blogging - versus the ilovepdg podcasting and the metric diet project + I want to write another screenplay...

I think the next step is some podcasts on the metric diet - see what it's like doing some "talking to myself" as oppossed to the double act with Dave.

Also - it's that time of year where we've got parties, holidays, birthdays, a wedding, our anniversary - the garden needs sorting - the list goes on...

It occurs to me that this old adage is very true and I think explains the problems we face with the 24/7 news cycle culture...

There just isn't that much happening in the world that is important in the longer term scheme of things!

Stuff not happening is really good... for everyone - except people who work in the media.

We should all spend less time on the unimportant stuff happening now and spend more time looking at a much broader historical sense of things.

If you get a chance listen to some "History according to Bob" - I can't remember how I found him - but I'm glad I did - some little gems that put a lot of stuff into perspective...

Interestingly - after immersing myself in the blogosphere and with the podcasting of the last couple of months - I have had no access to e-mail and internet for 6 days...

It was my choice... I could have taken my laptop with me - I could have visited an internet cafe - I know that there was access within the holiday complex we stayed in.

Know what? I didn't miss being connected at all...

Read some books - listened to some music (no podcasts) - played some golf...

Have officially done my 100 day diet - I used 3 out of my 5 "special" days - so I'll be completely finished tomorrow evening - in time for going on holiday...

Final weigh in shows a total weight loss of 15.45Kgs! Pretty damn good.

OK - so I did it the wrong way around - I've moved my blog onto my main davidcoe domain and I didn't do a post telling people before I switched it from blogspot and changed to FTP settings.

I apologise for any inconvenience to the 2 people who probably may have noticed.

In best CBA ("Can't Be Arsed") tradition I could have republished to blogspot with an additional posting telling people of the new address - but hey life's to short to look up all my settings etc.

This is easier and I'll e-mail the few people who may have an RSS feed and tell them via ilovepdg (which is also going to move soon - once we figure out the settings on the firewall thing...)

Looking at my blog here - all of my most recent posts are just pointing people at the ilovepdg blogsite where our weekly podcasts are going?

In the past 3 weeks I've managed to find/commit time to:

recording 3 podcasts
adjusting volumes / editing comedy sound clips to front and rear
setting "artwork" for said file (usually monkeys or pigs...)
uploading finished mp3 files
testing through i-podder
"blogging" the shownotes and testing links etc
coming to this blog site and linking to ilovepdg

In the same period I've only written 2 posts - which took me a fraction of the time.

So am I more interested in podcasting or blogging? The juries out!

Maybe once I've got my regular vlog running - I'll let you know...

The story so far...

A simple diet for simple men - 100 days - I'm 64% of the way through --- here comes the joke someone told me --- "wow David - it seems like only yesterday it was 63%!"

haha!

I've lost 12.27 kgs so far - pretty good going...

(I had to use this converter - as I've been tracking in lbs - which is not allowed in the 10 rules... http://www.healthyweightforum.org/eng/converter.asp)

Still I think it's all down-hill now - I have learnt to love fruit and I no longer see taramasalata as a light snack between meals - IT IS A MEAL STUPID...

It finally made it to the front page in the Independent Education Review yesterday... fuck French and German - kids should be learning Chinese! That's my version of the headline - not their's ( I bought a learn Chinese CD-ROM about 2 years ago - ok I haven't learnt any yet - but it's the general idea!).

Tom Peters and I have been boring anyone who'll listen (- admittedly more people listen to Tom than me!!) about China for years...

It will all come to pass - including my space travel theory and everything!

AT PDG we spend a long time doing lots of EMEA wide translations - maybe we can just do english and chinese in future...

My boss said to me the other day "David...you live the life" - went to see Engelbert Humperdinck at Nottingham Royal Centre last night.

Very good - must see experience - but whoa - what an old, old audience - made me and Polly feel like youngsters...

Strange warm-up comedian - helped set the scene for engelbert's sense of humour I guess?... anyway lots of risque / sex jokes but no f**king swearing - that would be rude...

No programme - but a v glossy brochure with lots of glam pictures of EH - nice to know that his philosophy is shared with me and President Bartlett from West Wing - "What's Next?..."

Post for this week - I'm still feeling there's a problem with blogging - I think I'm uncomfortable with the ego-ness of it all?

It's all about me... I know that adds up in terms of customer segmentation - the market experience - "it's all about personalisation" etc etc. Consumer choices - on demand services - Sky Plus - designer babies - you name it we can create a personal experience...

It just doesn't feel right somehow. At a basic human level? Maybe you can just go to far towards a personal utopia and then it seems indulgent?

I think I'm still searching for the right tone of voice some of the other voices that I've seen/heard are getting a bit monotonous.
